UFCJC Student Journalist Honored in 2024-2025 Hearst Multimedia Narrative Video Storytelling Competition

University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) Journalism junior Kimberly Blum has received eighth place in the 2024-2025 Hearst Journalism Awards Multimedia Narrative Video Storytelling competition. The winners were selected from 81 entries from 47 schools submitted in the first multimedia competition of the year.

Blum’s story, “’We’ve Been Humbled:’ Four Generations Living on One Plot Survive Hurricane Helene” focused on the Blinstrup family’s decision to remain in the coastal town of Steinhatchee, Florida, during the hurricane. She created the story in UFCJC Journalism Senior Lecturer Herbert Lowe’s Advanced Multimedia course.

UFCJC is currently in sixth place in the Intercollegiate Multimedia Competition based on accumulated student points after the first multimedia competition of the year.

The 65th annual Hearst Journalism Awards Program includes four writing, two photo, one audio, two television, one podcast and four multimedia competitions offering up to $700,000 in scholarships, matching grants and stipends.  Currently, there are 105 universities of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication with accredited undergraduate journalism programs are eligible to participate in the Hearst competitions.
