Eric Esterline Comments on Online Sports Betting
Eric Esterline, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications director of Sports Journalism and Communications and senior lecturer in Sports Media and Communication, is quoted in “The Culture of the Game in Florida: What Changed with the Entry of Sports Betting Online?” posted on the Univision 23 Miami-Ft. Lauderdale website on Feb. 19.
The story focuses on how the legalization of sports betting in Florida, with Hard Rock Casino as its only operator, has changed the gaming culture and impacted sports fans.
“Passing online betting has made it more attractive and convenient for both the consumer and bookmakers and online sites and apps,” said Esterline. “Culture generally accepts the game as a form of entertainment. Traditional sports betting used to often involve social meetings, friendly rivalries and a sense of community.”
According to Esterline, online sports betting can lead to gambling problems from increased accessibility, a change in sports consumption and debates on the ethics of sports betting.
