Cynthia Barnett and Harrison Hove Receive Prestigious 2024-25 UF Teaching and Adviser of the Year Awards
Two University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications faculty members have received prestigious University-wide 2024-25 teaching and advising awards. Cynthia Barnett, Journalism senior lecturer and director of Climate and Environment Reporting Initiatives, was selected as the UF Undergraduate Teacher of the Year. Harrison Hove, Journalism department interim chair and senior lecturer and UFCJC INC interim manager, was named Undergraduate Faculty Adviser/Mentor of the Year.
Both awards encourage and reward excellence, innovation and effectiveness in undergraduate teaching and advising.

Barnett, an award-winning author and journalist who reports on water and climate change around the world, creates professional experiences for students and sets high standards — with the expectation that students will “get their boots muddy” by immersing in communities. Her students report statewide, nationally and internationally and for the past four years in a row have won William Randolph Hearst Journalism Awards, the collegiate Pulitzers.

Hove oversees the College’s state-of-the-art multimedia newsroom and serves as director of the Summer Media Institute, an immersive learning experience for high school students. He is known for his personal commitment and care in helping and mentoring UFCJC students. He strives to listen carefully, allow students to guide conversations, nurture their creativity and critical thinking, and help them launch and grow in their careers through tapping his professional network. Since 2018, Hove has mentored eight Hearst Journalism Award National Championship participants, including three national winners.
Since 2007, eight of the 18 UF Undergraduate Teachers of the Year have been UFCJC faculty members. In addition to the UF honors, Barnett and Hove received their respective College-wide honors at the annual awards banquet on April 2.
