Carla Fisher Co-Authors Article on the Use of Metaphors to Explain Acupuncture in Family Medicine
Carla Fisher, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) Advertising associate professor, is the co-author of “Explaining Acupuncture in Family Medicine: Patients’ and Physicians’ Use of Metaphor” published in the Journal of Communication in Healthcare on Nov. 4.
The article, by Fisher and Christy J. W. Ledford and Paul Crawford, features the results of their study on the use of metaphors to prescribe alternative therapies, like acupuncture. They found that patients and providers use metaphors to explain why they accept acupuncture as treatment, why the body needs acupuncture and how it affects the body. They suggest that clinicians should use these results to develop interventions or translational tools.
