CJC Student Journalists Honored in 2020 FABJ Professional and College Contests
University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications student journalists received 12 awards in the Florida Association of Broadcast Journalists (FABJ) college contest and one award in the professional contest for content produced in 2020. The organization promotes excellence and education in broadcast journalism throughout Florida.
In the College Television Competition, the winners are:
- Overall Station of the Year: Winner, WUFT-TV/FM
- Best Newscast: Finalist, WUFT News Team, “WUFT News First at Five”
- Environmental Reporting: Winner, Valerie Lyons, “Ginnie Springs at Risk“
- General Assignment: Winner, Victor Prieto, “Saints Weather the Storms“
- Feature Reporting Hard: Winner, Chris O’Brien, “Faith Is Not the Building“
- Feature Reporting Cultural & Historical: Finalist, Hasley Pitman, “1920 Ocoee Florida Massacre: Is 2020 the Time for Reparations?”
- Sports Reporting: Winner, Victor Prieto, “Beyond The Finish Line“
- Weather Reporting: Winner, Joseline Dinoso, “Door To Disaster“
- Public Affairs: Finalist, Chris O’Brien, “4 Days, 5 Murders“

In the College Radio Competition, the winners are:
- Best Newscast: Winner, Anneliese Linder, “Election Night Newscast”
- Environmental Reporting: Winner, Taylor Levesque, “Santa Fe Diver”
- General Assignment: Winner, Anthony Montalto, “Cammack Election Win Party”
- Feature Reporting Light: Winner, Taylor Levesque, “Forest Treadwell”
- Feature Reporting Cultural & Historical: Winner, Sofia Mingote, “Josiah T. Walls”
- Reporter: Winner, Taylor Levesque
In the Professional Radio Competition, Anthony Montalto won for “Election Buttons” in the Feature Reporting Light category.
This is the second annual awards competition for FABJ, formerly known as Florida Associated Press Broadcasters. The organization received more than 550 entries in the professional contest from more than 40 radio and television stations and 55 entries in the college contest from more than 12 Florida-based college and university broadcasting programs. The contest is open to employees and stations that fall into the following categories: Cable, Commercial Television, Public Television, Commercial Radio, Public Radio.
