CJC Student Journalists and Alums Honored in 2021 FABJ News Awards Competition
University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications student journalists were honored in the Florida Association of Broadcast Journalists (FABJ) professional and college competitions for content produced in 2021. Winning categories included Best Newscast and Best Reporter in the College Radio competition, and Best Public Affairs and Best Sports Reporting in the College Television Competition.
In the Professional Radio Competition, the winners and finalists include:
- Consumer, Financial, Economic Reporting: Winner, Sky Lebron and Dylan Klemper, “Heirs’ Property”
- Series/Franchise|Hard: Winner, Sky Lebron, “Rural Broadband Issues in North Central Florida”
- Public Affairs: Finalist, Katie Hyson, “Much Went Wrong in 2021, But Here’s Where Progress Was Made This Year”
In the College Radio Competition, the winners and finalists include:
- Best Newscast: First Place, Meleah Lyden, “The Point Newscast”
- Best General Assignment Reporting: First Place, Kristin Moorehead, “Newberry Soil Collection Ceremony”
- Best Feature Light Reporting: First Place, Christina Pugliese, “Florida War Reenactors”
- Best Feature – Cultural/Historical Reporting: First Place, Meleah Lyden, “Lincoln High School Has an Important History, and This Part of the Gainesville Community is Fighting to Remember It”
- Best Reporter: First Place, Meleah Lyden
- General Assignment Long: Finalist, Jack Prator, “Florida Ranks Second in Government-Sold Homes in Flood Zones”
In the College Television Competition, the winners include:
- Best Public Affairs: First Place, WUFT-TV News Team, “Rising from the Rubble”
- Best Feature Hard News Reporting: First Place, Chris O’Brien “Never Say Never”
- Best Sports Reporting: First Place, Victor Prieto, “Advantage Chris”
This is the third annual awards competition for FABJ, formerly known as Florida Associated Press Broadcasters. The organization received more than 550 entries from more than 40 radio and television stations. The contest is open cable, commercial television, public television, commercial radio, and public radio stations.
The awards were presented at FABJ Gala at the Wyndham Orlando Resort on May 7. FABJ promotes excellence and education in broadcast journalism throughout Florida.
