Four CJC Alums Selected for “40 Gators Under 40” Awards
Four University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications alumni were honored as part of the UF Alumni Association 2019 “40 Gators Under 40” awards. The awards honor young alumni whose achievements positively reflect UF.
The CJC alumni honorees include Journalism major Karen Persis, Telecommunication majors Ashley Boxer and Laura Rutledge and Sports Communication graduate Dr. Annelie Schmittel.
Persis is an attorney in Orlando, Boxer is a Memorial Healthcare System corporate director in Government Relations in Hollywood, Florida, Schmittel vice president of Player Development for the Philadelphia 76ers and Rutledge is a reporter and host for CNN International, ESPN and SEC Network.
The UF Alumni Association established the Outstanding Young Alumni (OYA) Award in 2006 and in 2019 began awarding 40 Gators the OYA award at the 40 Gators Under 40 ceremony in April.
Criteria for the award include being an alumnus of the university in good standing, under the age of 40 by April of that year, making a significant impact on their industry and having professional and/or civic accomplishments.
