UFCJC Junior to Present at 2023 International Summit on Communication & Sport
Emma Bissell, a University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) Media Production, Management and Technology junior and a student in the UF Honors Program, will present her research paper, “Who’s Got Game?: A Case Study of Division 1 Female Athletes’ Use of Performance and Appearance-Related Photos on Social Media Before and After NIL,” at the 2023 International Association Summit on Communication & Sport in Barcelona, Spain in March 2023. She is one of two UF students to present at the conference.
Bissell worked with Roxane Coche, UFCJC Media Production, Management, and Technology associate chair and assistant professor, to examine how the NCAA Name, Image, Likeness (NIL) law affected collegiate female athletes’ use of social media to create a brand, to market themselves, or to improve their ability to represent another brand. Bissell’s primary objective was to identify if female athletes are choosing to rely on sex appeal or appearance-oriented photographs on social media platforms.
The IACS Summit is the only stand-alone conference for communication researchers interested in exploring sport from diverse critical, methodological, theoretical, and multi-disciplinary perspectives. The Summit is co-hosted by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the University of Alabama.
