Legendary Miler and Broadcaster Marty Liquori wins 2023 H.D. Thoreau Track & Field Broadcasting Award
Former CJC master’s student Marty Liquori, the legendary miler who also carved out a lengthy television career as a track commentator, has been awarded the 2023 H. D. Thoreau Track & Field Broadcasting Award by the Track & Field Writers of America.
Liquori’s broadcasting career began with ABC Television in 1972, reporting on the Munich summer Olympic games. He worked on five other Olympics for both ABC and NBC and provided commentary for major road races such as the New York City and Boston Marathons. In addition, he produced the show “Running and Racing” for ESPN for 14 years.
He now resides in Gainesville, Florida.
As a miler, Liquori first broke four minutes while in high school in New Jersey. In his freshman year at Villanova University in 1968, he made the U.S. Olympic team and reached the finals of the 1,500 meter run but suffered a stress fracture and finished 12th. He was the youngest person ever to compete in the final.
He later won NCAA and Penn Relays championships for his alma mater.
Established in 2015, the award honors the achievements of pioneering radio and early television work of legendary West Coast track broadcaster Henry D. Thoreau.
