Andrew Selepak Comments on Possible Ban on Social Media Use for Children Under 16
Andrew Selepak, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Media Production, Management, and Technology instructional assistant professor, is quoted in “‘It’s Unfair:’ Lake City Mother Defends Child’s Use of Social Media Pending Statewide Ban” posted on wcjb.com on Jan. 31.
Florida lawmakers are considering a ban on social media use for children 16 and under. However, one parent is defending her son’s use of the social platform TikTok to display his musical talents.
According to Selepak, social media can be used as a tool but believes it could harm children over time. He also believes the bill might not be as effective.
“We have plenty of research that indicates that young people using social media develop… body image issues, anxiety, depression, and are more likely to engage in self-harm,” said Selepak. “Children under 16 are still going to continue to use social media; simply trying to create a ban would be impossible to implement.”
