Rachel Grant to Serve as a Panelist at the 2024 American Political History Conference

Rachel Grant, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Journalism assistant professor, will be a panelist at the 2024 American Political History Conference at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, from June 6-8.

Grant’s panel, “Re-Collecting Collective Memory of the American Presidency: The Press, Institutional History, and Rebuilding Trust in Democracy,” will explore the role of various mediums, including the press, entertainment media, museums, monuments and archives in the process of remembrance and commemoration of American presidents.

The panel will consider the intersections between historical memory and institutional history, political power, media and public perception to offer insight into the complexities of commemorating and interpreting presidential legacies.

According to Grant, “Through our discussion, we hope to expand the boundaries of political history beyond traditional frameworks by emphasizing our diverse perspectives and unique methodological approaches as we consider the challenges and responsibilities of preserving and interpreting presidential legacies and the implications of integrating our voices into the broader discourse of American politics.”

The conference features a diverse range of dynamic sessions to foster interdisciplinary conversations about pressing questions in American political history, from the Early Republic to the current moment.
