Alumnus Daron Dean Named Visiting Lecturer in Visual Journalism
The University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) announced today that photojournalist Daron Dean, B.S. Journalism 2004, will join the Journalism Department as a visiting lecturer in visual journalism for the 2024-25 academic year.
Dean has been a correspondent for The New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Thompson Reuters and has worked at The Dallas Morning News, Anchorage Daily News, The Gainesville Sun and St. Augustine Record. His images have been published worldwide.
Since 2011, Dean has been a UFCJC adjunct lecturer teaching Advanced Photojournalism. He was recognized in 2018 with the inaugural UFCJC Adjunct Teacher of the Year Award. Dean has also taught photo and video journalism at Flagler College in St. Augustine.
In 2022, he created the Innovation News Center Photojournalism Experience which provides an opportunity for students to work in a daily newsroom environment. This past spring, his students completed 94 assignments for WUFT, WRUF, Fresh Take Florida and Fresh Take Business as well as Visual Journalism and Multimedia Journalism classes. He also spearheaded an initiative to update all of UFCJC’s photojournalism equipment to state-of-the-art cameras.
Dean earned a Master of Fine Arts in Photography from Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia, in 2020.
