Antoine Haywood

What are you teaching this semester?

This semester I am teaching Media, Cultures, and Identity (MMC 2640).

What is your area of expertise?

I am passionate about studying local communication infrastructure, civic media literacy and community-centered media-making processes.

Significant other, children, pets?

My spouse is Jill Haywood, a trained music therapist. We have a lovely 7-year-old daughter Ava Haywood and a tabby cat named Hamilton.

What excites you most about coming to Gainesville?

Coming to Gainesville is a full-circle experience for me. I was born and raised in West Palm Beach, my father’s side of the family is from Dunnellon and after being away from Florida for many years, having this opportunity to return and be a professor in a place I love dearly is profoundly meaningful and fulfilling.

What accomplishments, personal or professional, are you most proud of?

Earning a Ph.D. and getting a top-tier academic job all while supporting my family is an accomplishment that I am most proud of.

Your hero or biggest inspiration (alive or historical)?

My grandmother, Bessie Robinson, and my mentor, Dr. Ancil Deluz, are the two biggest inspirational forces that shaped my foundation.

What three things don’t we know about you?

  1. I am musically talented—I love to collect and spin vinyl records, and I play guitar.
  2. I have been a Florida football fan for most of my life. Go Gators!
  3. I’m an Eagle Scout.
