How Internships and Studying Abroad Can Propel Your Success with One Bold Decision
By Caitlyn Schiffer, B.S. Journalism 2024, M.A.M.C. student
Applied, denied. Applied, denied. The continuous cycle that many students endure when applying for internships. But what if you can diversify your experience by interning while studying abroad?
This may sound off-putting for those who would rather stay on campus than move thousands of miles away for a semester. That is a fair point. But when you open your mind and yourself to a different experience, the opportunities can change the trajectory of your college experience and career.
I always dreamed of studying abroad for a full semester, so I applied to participate in the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communication’s Fall Semester in Europe opportunity, which included programs in Paris, Seville, Spain, and Dublin. But when it came to one week before the trip, I was ridden with anxiety. For something I had wanted for so long, I had become conflicted, scared of what I would miss at school and with my friends. However, I realized that it was worth the risk to better myself and my career. So, I flew out of JFK airport in New York on Aug.19, 2024, and embarked on one of my life’s best and most fulfilling experiences.
Why should you study abroad?
Studying abroad is an unparalleled opportunity to step out of your comfort zone, broaden your perspective, and gain life-changing experiences that shape your personal and professional growth.
For the first month of my abroad experience, I interned with NBC Sports for the 2024 Paris Paralympics. This experience thrust me into a position I had never done before, social media marketing, forcing me to adapt and become adept at these skills. Being in a new environment, uncomfortable in my position, is what transformed my experience, allowing me to grow. I learned much from my colleagues and myself by participating, asking questions and observing, making it such a memorable experience.
Immersing yourself in a new culture fosters adaptability, independence, and a global mindset—highly valued in today’s interconnected world. After interning and studying in Paris, Seville and Dublin, I experienced three completely different cultures and ways of living, basically living three completely different lives in three months. However, I was able to adopt a greater sense of independence throughout these differing journeys.
A global mindset equips you with the cultural sensitivity and awareness needed to work effectively in diverse teams, communicate across boundaries and bring innovative perspectives to the workplace. While in Dublin, I interned at DCU Business School, working alongside individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. My six-week internship provided invaluable insights into new perspectives and significantly enriched my professional experience. As a journalist, I am accustomed to conducting research for my stories, but this role challenged me to expand my skills by assisting with academic research. This required me to adapt, learn new methodologies, and approach projects from a broader, more inclusive perspective. Embracing these new experiences and attributes enhanced my personal growth and strengthened my resume. Overall, it expanded my horizons.
New familiar faces
I started not knowing a soul among my 14 study abroad classmates, but I left with lifelong friends. What initially felt daunting became an opportunity to grow and connect. The experience expanded my openness to others and allowed me to embrace my authentic self. Often overlooked is that some of the greatest lessons come from the people around you, making it essential to seek new connections and embrace diverse perspectives.
Take the Leap
Applying to internships can be a scrutinizing process. But stepping outside your comfort zone and exploring international opportunities can transform your journey. Diversifying your experience through studying and interning abroad enhances your resume and shapes your personal growth. By embracing the unfamiliar, you open yourself to a world of possibilities that could redefine your college experience and propel your career to new heights.
