UFCJC Student Journalist Places Eighth in the 2024-25 Hearst Audio News and Features Competition
University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Journalism senior Ailee Shanes has placed eighth in the 2024-25 Hearst Journalism Awards Audio News and Features competition for two stories: “Tampa-Area Amateur and Junior Hockey Players Try to Grow the Sport in Puerto Rico” and “Cedar Island Resident Details Horror of Finding Home Washed Away After Hurricane Helene.” The contest included 57 entries from 36 universities.
Audio News and Features entries must feature coverage of breaking or developing news and/or non-deadline news, non-deadline reporting of personalities, events, or issues. Entries may be based on but not limited to public affairs, business, investigations, science, sports or weather.
UFCJC is currently in fourth place in the Intercollegiate Broadcast Competition based on the number of accumulated student points so far this year.
The 65th annual Hearst Journalism Awards Program includes four writing, two photo, one audio, two television, one podcast and four multimedia competitions offering up to $700,000 in scholarships, matching grants and stipends. Currently, there are 105 universities of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication with accredited undergraduate journalism programs are eligible to participate in the Hearst competitions.
