This process is for on-campus programs only. For more information regarding admission into the online master’s program, please visit: onlinemasters.jou.ufl.edu/admission-requirements/.

Admission into our on-campus master’s programs (both Research and Theory and the Professional Communication programs) is for fall semesters only. The official application deadlines are as follows:

Fall admissions onlyDeadline
International applicant deadlineFebruary 1
Early deadline for domestic students
(Apply by the February 1 deadline for priority scholarship consideration. Most scholarships will be awarded prior to the May 15 deadline.)
February 1
Final domestic student deadlineMay 15

Our faculty and staff strongly encourage all applicants to submit required application materials two weeks prior to the deadline. After the stated deadline, no additional application materials or revisions will be accepted. Please see the list below for the required application materials and the minimum requirements for acceptances.

Domestic applicants: The criteria and assessment of applications remains the same for both the early and final deadlines. Early deadline applicants will receive decisions sooner than final deadline applicants. If you are interested in scholarships, all your application materials should be submitted by the priority scholarship consideration deadline to be most competitive for any available funds.

Application Requirements

  • Transcripts
    • Note: Unofficial transcripts are sufficient for application purposes. However, official transcripts will be REQUIRED if admitted to the program. Also, if you are a UF student, you do not need to submit transcripts (pending you have no financial holds) as they are in our internal database.
  •  English Proficiency Exam Scores (International Applicants Only)
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Resume
  • 3 Letters of Recommendation

For step by step instructions on how to apply, please download the Master’s Application Guide. If you have any additional questions regarding the admissions process or to check the status of your application please email us at gradapps@jou.ufl.edu.

Minimum Requirements for Acceptance

  • An undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or better
  • Conferred baccalaureate degree
  • For international students, English Proficiency exam scores

The University of Florida Graduate School requires a minimum grade point average of 3.0 for all upper-division undergraduate work. Applicants are also expected to have received a minimum grade point average of 3.0 for all core courses within the Journalism and Mass Communications area and their areas of special interest. Direct admission to the Graduate School is dependent upon the presentation of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.

Admission is determined by several factors beyond the application material including space availability and supervisory availability, particularly in specialized areas. Meeting the minimum application requirements does not guarantee acceptance. Professional and respectful treatment of admissions and other staff members, faculty and administrators is required. Unprofessional or disrespectful treatment may result in denial of admission.

We expect admission decisions to be released six to eight weeks after the admission deadline. Please note that in some cases the availability of admission decisions is affected by the central office of admissions. If you have not received an admission decision after eight weeks, please contact our admissions team at gradapps@jou.ufl.edu.
