Sports Scholarships


Students in CJC sports-related programs or wishing to pursue sports-media careers can apply for several scholarships offered by the College. To apply for any of these scholarships, click on the 2024-25 Knight scholarship application.

Red Barber Scholarship: Fund 004543

Support scholarship for juniors and seniors majoring in sports broadcasting; preference to applicants planning a career in public broadcasting; based on scholarship and financial need.

Tom McEwen Scholarship in Sports Journalism: Fund 018689

This fund was established 2013 by Linda McEwen in honor of her late husband, Tom, to support a scholarship for a junior or senior majoring in journalism with a concentration in sports journalism. Tom was born in 1923 in Wauchula, Florida. He earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Florida in 1944. Tom received his degree in absentia due to WWII, serving as a platoon leader with the U.S. Army’s 785th Tank Battalion. For nearly five decades, Tom was regarded the most influential voice in the Tampa Bay sports community. He was The Tampa Tribune’s sports editor and columnist from 1962 to 2001. Tom passed away in 2011.

Aimee Nicole Sachs Memorial Scholarship in Sports Journalism: Fund 028459

A scholarship to benefit undergraduate students pursuing a career in sports communication, with a demonstrated financial need. Preference for a rising junior or senior. Preference for award to be given to two or more students.

Edward Aschoff Memorial Fund: Fund 024497

Support students majoring in sports communication with a demonstrated background of commitment to advancing diversity and advocating for diversity, equity, and inclusion, through activities with established organizations, volunteer work, academic pursuits, or similar evidence of their commitment.
