Astronomical events millions of lightyears away from Earth teach humanity about the history of the universe and provide new insights into unexplored properties of matter. “The field of astrophysics has two key components. It helps us discover what is happening in the universe, and it uses astrophysical objects as laboratories to learn more about the fundamental laws of nature,” said Imre Bartos, researcher and professor of astrophysics at the University of Florida.

Kelley rides to work every morning on a train that floats above its tracks. Passing by, she records a video of children at the local hover board park on her cell phone, which she hasn’t had to charge in months. She then departs the train and takes the elevator up to floor 112 in a matter of seconds. Kelley lives in a not-so-distant world powered by more effective electric and magnetic fields. She lives in a world of superconductors.

Not many people can say they have worked on a math problem for nine months. Even fewer can say that they got it right. But Clifford Will can, and soon he’ll have a medal to prove it. Will, a distinguished professor in the physics department at the University of Florida, will receive the 2019 Albert Einstein Medal on June 6 from the Albert Einstein Society in Bern, Switzerland.
